Handling of Precision ball bearings with Particle contamination

Precision ball bearings give one of the best performances when it comes to its functionality and output. However, even the slightest particle contamination can affect its working. Hence, one should avoid its direct exposure to extreme environments where particles are present.

Bearings are covered in shields and seals, used for preventing contamination to reach the inside of the bearing. Even after assembly, a small gap remains between the shield and the inner ring of the bearing. This small gap may permit entry to minute particles.

Here is the list of things you need to keep in mind for careful handling of precision bearings:

  • Bearing handling room should be kept neat and clean.
  • Do not remove bearings from packaging until just before use.
  • When you move bearings to a container, make sure that the container is clean. The lid of the container should be closed and cleaned every day to prevent accumulation of dust particles.
  • Do not use a bearing that has been dropped since it may be brinelled. A brinelled bearing will generate a high level of acoustic sound.
  • For applying an adhesive to a bearing, use clean dampened cloth with an alcohol agent to clean oily surfaces of the rings. Do not use excessive cleaning agent since the liquid itself could leak into the bearing carrying along particles with it.
  • Make use of a mechanical dispenser while applying lubricant on the outer surface of the bearings. Using cotton swabs or clothing material could leave small fibrous particles in the bearings that could cause severe contamination of the bearings.
  • Try not to expose bearings to outside air, there could be airborne contamination through dust, dirt, and humidity.

Hope the above key points shall help you for careful handling of precision bearings.
